The mission of Tag is to promote and preserve the art of intaglio as a production print process by making it known, relevant and commercially accessible to today’s graphic arts, print production, and artistic communities.
We are on this mission because the process of commercially produced intaglio has largely disappeared from public recognition. Today, people who design for, purchase and utilize print are not likely to realize intaglio’s place in commercial printing. We are here to spread awareness of intaglio, including how it’s done, how it can be utilized, and how to design for it.
We are here to share the art and beauty of intaglio. To show how this artisanal process adds so much value to today’s graphic communications by standing out amongst all the messaging we are exposed to daily.
In the wider printing industry, technological innovation allows us to reproduce printed material faster and cheaper than ever. Combined with the sheer volume of digital communication and social media messaging, there is an overwhelming amount of communication happening now more than ever before in history. Yet, there is no other process like intaglio, which is why it is still used today to produce currency and other forms of legal documents. It is impossible to fake or reproduce and the addition of innovative security measures in ink and die-making add layers of security that no other process is capable of.
In today’s environment of communication overload, sending an intaglio printed, hand-written note or letter will stand out, impossible to overlook. The recipient will stop, pause in their busy day, take the time to read and most importantly, they will feel. Feel that someone cared enough about them to take pen to paper, feel the connection to another human being on the other end of the correspondence in direct contrast to all of the anonymous or mass communications they consume every day. They will FEEL the impression, the ink, the luxurious paper. They will treasure and respond to that feeling.
Intaglio printing is luxury. It carries forth history as a craft that has produced Bibles, drafted constitutions, honored heads of state, welcomed new babies and announced weddings. Intaglio is still relevant today because humanity will never lose the need to feel. It is feeling conveyed on paper. Intaglio is not merely printing, but a physical realization of art that remains unparalleled in the print world today.
TAG is re-imagining intaglio to fit into today’s print marketplace.
